The NSW government has today launched a new training program for Aboriginal foster carers. The improved training package has been developed with careful collaboration between the Department of community services and Aboriginal reference groups. A step by step Aboriginal Assessment tool will equip case workers with the skills to assess foster applicants. The "Our Carers for our kids training package" will include information on how to maintain the child's connection to family, community and culture.

Minister for the department of community services, Kevin Greene says the new package will show foster carers how to best support Indigenous children coming into foster care.

He spoke with Ellice Mol about the package.

Local Noise - Indigenising Hip-Hop in Australiasia

(43 downloads)

Localnoise.net.au is a new website exploring the role between hip hop, language and local culture.

Launched last week, the site is the culmination of a three-year study looking at the indigenisation of hip-hop – that’s the way hip hop is adapted and appropriated into local environments and is used to tell the stories of everyday people.

The project, Local noise, has also been looking at the way hip hop can be used as an educational tool ‑ the way it can succeed in cutting through to marginalized groups where other education policies have failed.

Funded by the Australian Research Council and run out of the University of Technology Sydney, the site features interviews, audio, videos and papers by academics Tony Mitchell and Alistair Pennycook who headed up the project.

One of the research assistants on the project is Astrid Lorange and ahead of the website’s launch she spoke with Ellice Mol.

(60 downloads)

Download this episode (5 min)
A new Judging system has been announced for the 2007 Australian Music Prize, recognising excellence in Australian music. This year the Community Broadcasting sector has been left out of the judging. Community radio is a strong part of the Australian music industry and broadcasters have raised concerns about the lack of independent voices on this year’s panel.

Ellice Mol began by asking The Prize Director, Scott Murphy about the re-shaping of the judging panel.

Also included in this report is Natalie Martin from AMRAP (Ausralian Music Radio Airplay Project) and Radio 2ser's Music Director Andrew Khedoori.
