When politicians throw mud at each other, does it stick? And does it make the electorate more or less likely to vote for the person or party dishing out the mud?
With the election getting a little dirty, I spoke with John Howard’s biographer Dr Peter Van Onselen from Edith Cowan University about the tactics being employed so far by the two major parties.
Included in this report is an interview with Psychologist Quentin Black from the University of South Australia.

Here is the audio for a video produced by Tim Longhurst, Treffyn Koreshov and myself as a send up of one of the coalition video campaigns titled "The Economy is Central to Everything". After some brainstorming we thought... 'Is the economy really central to everthing?" I produced the audio for this in the early hours of the morning. Pretty good for our first attempt. More to come
It might sound like an ad for the greens but this was not our intention.

Monday, Oct 15, 2007Blog Action Day

Today is BLOG ACTION DAY and it's about time we raised some global environmental issues. On my way to work today I walked past a busker who was playing 'If I Only Had a Brain" from the Wizard of Oz on his trombone. If I remember back to the days when I played dorothy in my year six primary school musical the words go a little like this... "I would while away the hours conferring with the flowers, consulting with the rain. And my head I'd be scratching while my thoughts were busy hatching if I only had a brain". Well I'm just going to point out that he was a scarecrow and he had some pretty good ideas, you might say they were no brainers but I would say he was onto something. Unlike my unfortunate friend the scarecrow who didn't have a brain, we do. We can put our brains together and take a stand to inform ourselves an d those around us about the severe impact us humans can have on our environment if we don't think. I don't hear anyone these days saying they would like to confer with the flowers and I think there should be more of it! More appreciation of what mother nature provided for us. We certainly have flowers even if it takes a bus ride out of the city to discover and I mean a bus ride, you don't need that 4WD to get you across town everyday do you? What we don't have much of in this beautiful country is rain! and while I wish I could while away the hours conferring with the flowers and consulting with the rain, I think I should be consulting with you and the rest of the world on this issue. Lets conserve our biodiversity with simple things like saving water, saving energy and keeping you cat in at night...
Take note of what goes down the drain: Don't put oils, fats or harmful chemicals down the sink-they will eventually end up in the rivers, lakes or oceans and harm our water quality and wildlife. Use a strainer in the kitchen sink to collect solids from your washing up water. and another tip just in case you needed another idea... Conserve water: Install water conservation devices in the home, school and workplace. Triple A shower heads, flow restrictors on taps, and dual flush toilets can more than halve the amount of water you use, which will save you money too. With the five year anniversary of the Bali Bombing today, Friday 12th October, the question of Australia’s stance on the death penalty has once again emerged.
Labour party Shadow Foreign Affairs spokesperson Robert McClelland presented a speech on Monday night about Australia’s position on the death penalty, saying that the government should oppose the death penalty for foreign terrorists as well as Australian citizens.
However on Tuesday morning Leader of the Labour Party, Kevin Rudd stressed that the Labour Government would never attempt to have the death penalty overturned for terrorists and Robert McClelland would be counselled on the matter.
Associate Professor Lynne Forsterlee Head of Phycology and sociology at Central Queensland University spoke to Ellice Mol about Australia’s position on the death penalty.
Katie Wood, Campaign Coordinator for Amnesty International, Australia also features in this report.

It’s been thirty years since the introduction of the NSW anti-discrimination act. The Act was the first of it’s kind to be introduced in Australia, South Australia and Western Australia following suit in 1984 with the equal opportunity act. The 30th anniversary will be marked by a ceremony at parliament house on the 25th of October.
The act as we know it today was developed after several amendments. Mr Stepan Kerkyasharian, president of the Anti-Discrimination Board says that it’s effective in educating and deterring people from being discrimination.
Ellice Mol asked Mr Kerkyashaian how other states stack up against NSW in their anti-discrimination laws.
